Beauty Icon: Ava DuVernay

As a woman of color in the entertainment industry it's a struggle. Being an artist is challenging and for most of us what fuels us is an undying love and passion for our craft. Although it is 2012, the entertainment industry has not made much progress in the diversity department and when it comes to women of color we are often  MIA. When we are represented it is usually a stereotype. There are exceptions to the rule, but they are few and far between. I hope that things will change and I believe that one of those examples of change, is the talented and beautiful director Ava DuVernay. If you haven't heard of her, you will, because she is a dynamic force. Ms. DuVernay made history this year at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival by being the first African American to win the Best Director Award for her film Middle of Nowhere. Her first theatrically released feature film I Will Follow (2011) was highly praised by Roger Ebert, she has also directed several music documentaries for BET. I think in order for more positive, complex, rich characters of color to be portrayed in the media we have to be part of the creative forces behind the scenes as well. Also as consumers we need to be more conscious of supporting our positive black filmmakers. I applaud and celebrate Ms. DuVernay's hard work and talent and I think you should too:)

Cheers!
